Garden Island Dock Yard Gets a Face Lift
McConnell Dowell were selected contractors to top the cruiser wharf at Garden
Island. The project cost was $4.3 million. How do you refurbish a wharf? With ingenuity and with the assistance
of satisfactory machines.
First of all, the piles had to be surveyed with several having to be replaced with new log piles and the remainder
being boxed up and capped with a grout topping with rebar installed vertically to tie in to the overall concrete
pour. Finally when all the piles were completed a 200-270mm, 50 mpa topping was laid over the whole of the wharf
area.
Mr Tony Button from McConnell Dowell rang Advanced Building Systems who distributes the Allen Razorback
Screed and said "Can we have a 10.67 metre screed within 3 days?"
ABS answered "yes". McConnell Dowel asked "What tolerances can you guarantee?"
And the answer was "Well, +/- 0.75 of a mm in 3 metres has been achieved for a Super Flat Floor at Castle
Hill, but the normal tolerances that we are asked to screed is +/- 3mm in 3 metres."
"That will do" said Tony from McConnell Dowell. "We only need +/- 5mm in 3 metres."
The Allen Air Screed was delivered, it worked, it performed to McConnell Dowell's satisfaction. ABS did it again.
